Each individual flower at Pith Flower Shop is made upon request and meticulously handcrafted by founder, Irene Wei, who studied this craft in Taiwan. Originally, artificial flowers were developed in Ancient China so that people could access flowers that were not locally grown, or restricted by the changing seasons. Similarly, you can request any flower of choice, and Pith Flower Shop will produce them for you. These flowers are made using a paper-like material called pith “paper” (or in Chinese, tong cao zhi 蓪草紙) handmade by one of the last remaining pith veneer makers in Taiwan. Buying these flowers supports further research and preservation efforts toward the near defunct craft of making Taiwanese pith flowers.
